The predominant reason children ate what adults did before the 20th century was families didn't have time to make more than one meal. You couldn't reach into a cabinet and pull out a package of some plastic-wrapped snack because those just didn't exist.
It's also important to remember that our current conception of children — as people still going through intense stages of physical and mental development — was not always so concrete. Dr Veit says our current idea of what childhood is really began to develop in the early 20th century.
